Product Overview

The Whirlpool WT1090BA is a 90cm built-in induction cooktop with five cooking zones plus a Flexi Zone, finished in black Schott glass and controlled by front slider touch controls. Induction technology heats the pan rather than the cooktop surface, which reduces wasted energy and speeds up cooking, and the Power (Booster) function adds extra power when you need to bring something to the boil quickly.

Chef Control lets you slide continuously from high to low heat, 6th SENSE functions take care of simmering, melting, keeping warm and boiling, and the FlexiSide zone lets you place pots anywhere in the area for more even heat. With 18 power levels plus Booster, a total power of 10.8kW, a timer, Stop & Go and a control panel lock, it fits an 860mm x 490mm cut-out and must be installed by a qualified technician.

Whirlpool appliances are distributed in Australia by Arisit Pty Limited.

Product Details & Specifications

Product Features
  • Induction technology: heats the pan, not the cooktop, reducing energy dispersion for faster and more energy-efficient cooking.
  • FlexiSide / Flexi Zone: freedom to place pots anywhere in the flexible area for more uniform heat distribution, with two linked zones working together at one power level and timer.
  • Chef Control: continuous cooking from high to low temperatures with a slide on the surface for added flexibility.
  • 6th SENSE functions: automatic Simmering, Melting, Keep Warm and Boiling functions that monitor the pan temperature with sensors.
  • Booster (Power function): supplies extra power to a zone above its nominal value to significantly reduce boiling times.
  • 18 power levels plus Booster: a total power of 10.8kW.
  • Black Schott glass: a smooth ceramic glass surface that is easy to wipe clean.
  • Front slider touch control: slide a finger along the cursor slider to set the heat, or touch directly on the level you want.
  • Timer: program each zone for 1 to 99 minutes, with the zone switching off when the time is up.
  • Stop & Go: pauses cooking and resumes at the same power and timer settings.
  • Control panel lock: blocks the controls to prevent unwanted operation, useful as a childproof safety.
  • Pan detection and residual heat indicator: a zone stops heating if no suitable pan is present, and an "H" shows on zones that are still hot.
  • Power Management: the total power of the cooktop can be limited from 2kW to 7kW to suit your electrical supply.
Programmes / Functions

6th SENSE functions (per the Whirlpool use and care guide):

  • Simmering: keeps food at a gentle simmer after it has boiled. Select the zone and press the 6th SENSE sensor until the simmering light comes on.
  • Melting: maintains a low temperature, ideal for defrosting food or slowly melting chocolate and butter.
  • Keep Warm: automatically sets a suitable power level to keep cooked food hot.
  • Boiling: automatic boiling control for pasta, rice, eggs and other boiled foods, available only on zones that show the boiling symbol. A first beep warns that boiling is about to start, a second beep after 30 seconds is the time to add the food, and a third beep 30 seconds after the timer starts signals that power is being reduced to maintain a gentle, continuous boil.

Functions:

  • Touch control: touch the general ON/OFF sensor for at least one second, then slide a finger along a cursor slider (sliding right increases the power, left decreases it) or touch directly on the level you want. Each action is confirmed by a beep, and no pressure is needed. If no action is taken within 10 seconds of switching on, the touch control switches off automatically.
  • Flexi Zone (FlexiCook): press the FlexiCook sensor to link two zones, then set one power level and timer for both. Place pots in the centre of the zone so they cover at least one of the reference points. Select level 0 on either linked zone to disable the function, which clears the settings of those zones.
  • Power (Booster) function: slide to the top level and hold for one second, or touch "P" and hold for one second. The zone supplies extra power for a limited time, then returns to the top level with a beep. Using Power on one zone may reduce the power available to other zones.
  • Stop & Go: touch the Stop & Go sensor to pause cooking (the timer pauses too), and touch it again to resume at the same settings.
  • Control panel lock: touch the lock sensor for at least one second to block all sensors except the ON/OFF sensor, and touch it again to unlock.
  • Timer: once a zone's power level is set, use the minus and plus sensors to set a time from 1 to 99 minutes. Each zone can have its own timer, and the indicator shows the shortest remaining time. When the time is up, the zone switches off and a series of beeps sounds.
  • Pan detector: if no pan, or an unsuitable pan, is on a zone, the zone stops heating and shows the "no pan" symbol. Replacing the pan resumes heating at the previously selected power level.
  • Residual heat indicator: an "H" shows on the power indicator of a zone while the glass is hot.
  • Beep silencer: press the timer plus sensor and the lock sensor together for three seconds to switch off the beep that accompanies each action (On/Off, timer end and lock beeps stay active).
  • Power Management: within the first minute after connecting the cooktop to the power supply, the total power can be limited to between 2kW and 7kW in 0.5kW steps. Once the limit is reached, the cooktop will not let you increase a zone's power until other zones are turned down.

Extra Information

The 6th SENSE functions suit cooks who want the cooktop to handle the temperature for them, whether that is melting chocolate, keeping a sauce warm or boiling pasta. The guide notes that they work best when the pan's ferromagnetic base matches the size of the cooking zone, that high-temperature functions (above 100°C) need a flat, even base, preferably a "sandwich" type, and that neither the pan nor the zone should be hot at the start.

The Power Management menu is worth knowing about before the cooktop is installed. It can only be reached in the first minute after connecting to the power supply: hold the timer plus sensor for three seconds until "PL" shows, then use the lock sensor and the plus and minus sensors to pick a limit between 2kW and 7kW. To change the limit later, the cooktop must be unplugged and reconnected. The guide also warns against using the cooktop during the pyrolytic cleaning cycle of an oven installed below it, because of the high temperatures that cycle reaches.

Induction cookware needs a completely flat ferromagnetic base, such as enamelled steel, cast iron or stainless steel made for induction, and the guide does not recommend diffuser plates or aluminium, glass, copper or clay pans. Humming, whistling or creaking while cooking, and a fan that keeps running after cooking, are normal. If the control panel lock is active when the cooktop is switched off, it cannot be turned on again until the lock is released, and water or objects on the buttons can accidentally switch the lock on or off. The cooktop is for household and similar use, not professional or outdoor use, and should not be used if the glass is cracked.
