Smart's gas BBQs are certified for installation in an enclosed alfresco, which is an area with a roof and three walls that still has 25% natural ventilation. For these spaces Smart recommends a rangehood to clear smoke and fumes, and an interlock as a further level of safety. The interlock ties the two together, so the BBQ cannot be lit until the extractor is moving enough air.

The system only works with a high powered rangehood. Smart's alfresco checklist calls for at least 2,000 m3 of air per hour and suggests a twin motor rangehood to reach that flow, such as the Smart SMARH120. The rangehood sits 1,200 mm to 1,600 mm above the cooking surface. It suits natural gas and plumbed LPG, but not portable gas bottles.

It is made for Smart's gas BBQs, the 401WB, 601WB and 4000DG-SL. The WM700EW is electric and the PW01 is wood fired, so neither needs it. The system must be installed by a licensed gas fitter or plumber, and needs a standard 10 amp GPO nearby for the main power box. Accessories sit outside the manufacturer's product warranty.
